Travelling with Cannabis

Hey folks! I hope everyone is enjoying the lovely weather. As I write, the chill air of autumn’s inevitability has retreated back into one of what I assume will be several unseasonably warm summer-like days. It’s mornings like this that make me reflect on the brevity of simple weather in this part of the world. We tend to experience extremes here in Canada when it comes to the temperament of nature, with one day to the next usually beginning with the question “Should I bring a sweater?”. The answer is always yes, better safe than sorry.

Something else that’s unique about our country is of course the existence of our cannabis industry, which is the first of its kind in the world. We’re pioneers representing the first journey into the uncharted regions of how stoned an entire country can get, with all four corners of our great nation practically swimming in dank weed. That’s why this week we’re going to revisit the rules regarding travelling with cannabis. So, without further ado, let’s dive into where you can and cannot go and how much weed you can bring with you while you travel.

Where Can I Go and How Much Weed Can I Bring?

Realistically a Canadian can go anywhere within Canada while possessing cannabis without issue, as long as they adhere to the limitations in terms of quantity and store it according to the legal requirements. The magic number to remember is 30 grams of dried cannabis or it’s equivalent. If you are travelling with concentrates or infused pre rolls and aren’t sure what the equivalency is, most companies put that information on the label. If you can’t find it (or it isn’t there), pop the name of the product in question into the Ontario Cannabis Store website and it should give you that info in the same section of the product information that you’ll find the THC and such. If travelling by motor vehicle, the cannabis must be sealed in its original packaging and kept out of reach of the occupants of the vehicle, ideally in the trunk. It goes without saying but driving while using or under the influence of cannabis is super illegal and will land you in some hot water, so don’t do it.

If you want to soar majestically through the air while in possession of choice Canadian ganja there are a few rules to follow. First and foremost, you can only travel within Canada. That feels like it should be obvious, but I’m going to say it anyway: You cannot take any cannabis across any international border for any reason, even medical, due to cannabis still being illegal as far as the US federal government is concerned. Even if you’re travelling from Canada into one of the American states where cannabis is legal, it is a massive no-no. In fact, good rule of thumb especially if one is travelling to the USA is pretend that cannabis doesn’t exist as far as you and the border guard are concerned, the US federal stance on cannabis being fairly draconian in nature.

When travelling by air it is important to remember that the 30-gram limit is still in effect and applies to each adult passenger. So for example, if you and your two best friends want to engage with air travel within Canada whilst in possession of cannabis, the total you could take is 90 grams, split equally between the three of you. Which is honestly, more than enough to turn wherever you’re going into a party. The cannabis has to be stored in your carry-on bag and cannot go into checked bags, with all liquids and oils being subject to the 100 ml limitation that applies to all liquid during air travel and must be stored inside a single, clear container.

That’s about all you need to know if you’re going to be travelling within Canada by land or by sky. Remember, 30 grams is the personal limit you’re allowed to possess, so be conscious of how much electric lettuce you’re travelling with!
