Scared Green: The Best Stoner Horror Movies

Hey folks!

Welcome back to another blog post where we dive into cannabis culture and all things weed. To say I’m a bit of cinephile (that’s someone who likes movies so much they need a pretentious term for it) is an understatement. I frickan love movies. In particular I adore horror movies. When I was a young boy, I saw a VHS copy of The Shining at a friend's house. Once I had recovered from a month of fitful sleep and a staunch refusal to get into a bathtub, I dove back in for more. I began devouring as many horror films as a 10-year-old possibly could, much to the chagrin of my mother who would then have to field questions about the feasibility of a zombie apocalypse and what her plans were if the living dead were to suddenly rise to devour the living. She’s a patient lady my mom.

As we descend into fall and the nights become longer, I feel the urge to go on weekly horror movie marathons swelling to unmanageable proportions and that’s why this week, we’re going to be talking about the best stoner horror movies. Before you ask, yes there are a lot of them and yes, the quality between them varies…quite wildly. So, let’s get spooky and run down a list of the best horror movies you can watch that heavily feature cannabis or are just perfectly suited to the cannabis experience.

Halloweed

Yes, there is a movie literally called “Halloweed” and it’s awesome. As the name implies, this is not a movie meant to be taken seriously. The killer in the movie goes by the knee slapping moniker: “The Candy Corn Killer” … which now that I’m thinking of it is objectively the most terrifying name for a serial killer ever. It is for all intents and purposes, a comedy horror movie that leans into sheer stupidity and over the top gore. It’s a movie designed with a very specific audience in mind.

Pairs well with: Any bubbly happy sativa strain will help you to get the most out of this cinematic experience. Examples include Blue Dream or Sage n Sour.

Army of Darkness

This might be my choice for absolute best horror movie to get high and watch. The third movie in the Evil Dead franchise, it exchanges the “cabin in the woods” setting from the first two movies for a medieval time travel horror-comedy adventure featuring the chin man himself, Bruce “Don’t Call Me Ash” Campbell. Endlessly quotable and with enough gore and undead horrors to satisfy horror movie fans, this is one film that everyone should watch at least once. Hail to the king baby.

Pairs well with: This is a job for something righteous and potent, like Permanent Marker or Marshmallow Milk.

Idle Hands

Ask ten millennials what their favorite horror comedy is and most of them will probably say Shaun of The Dead. Remind them that Idle Hands exists and you’ll watch about half of them change their answer. This movie is basically one-part American Pie, one part The Exorcists with a bit of An American Werewolf in London thrown in for good measure. It is the early 2000’s distilled into horror comedy form. Devon Sawa plays a stoner layabout with an inexplicably attractive partner who discovers that his right hand has become possessed by a demon and has begun to murder his friends and family. It’s a fabulous piece of cinema.

Pairs well with: Something to facilitate maximum giggles, like Jack Herer or White Widow.

John Carpenter’s Halloween

Now, it’s time for the only straight up horror movie on the list. I would be completely remiss if I didn’t include this movie as it is arguably the greatest horror movie of all time. I am specifically referring to the 1978 original, which helped lay the groundwork for the slasher movie genre (shoutout to Canadian classic Black Christmas which was technically the first North American slasher movie). From the soundtrack to the pacing, everything in this movie is damn near perfect and set the bar for every horror movie that came after it. If you haven’t seen it, set aside some time this year to enjoy a film that’s just as terrifying today as it was when it was released.

Best pairs with: In this case, smoke a nice heavy indica to help you settle into the couch while Michael Myers does his thing, like Comatose or Northern Lights.

That about sums up my list for the best stoner Halloween movies! I hope everyone has a safe and fun spooky season. Till next time folks!
