Cannabis Packaging Updates

Hey folks! The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and new cannabis regulations are being put into place. Truly, summer is on the horizon. While most of these new regulations apply to cannabis growers and retailers, there are a few that apply to you, our beloved customer, and could shake up how you buy your weed. So, let’s strap in and learn about how your cannabis shopping experience might change a bit in the coming months and years.

Transparency

Transparency is important in all sectors of business and life. It makes it so that we’re all beholden to each other to maintain a certain degree of decorum and quality in our social and professional lives. Cannabis is of course, an industry that benefits from transparency; especially as far as the consumer is concerned. We’re lucky that we have a regulated cannabis market that allows us to find out not only what the potency and terpenes of a product is but also what went into it’s growing practices and whether it meets our own personal standards of quality. One only needs to check the label of the product to find the relevant information which is a big step up from the old days where we would just light up and hope for the best.

The biggest issue with the information on the label is quite simply that it is a pain in the butt to read sometimes; with the font being written out in a size so small, it gets lost in the mess of info on the label. Well my friends, your days of straining your eyes are over because the font size is being increased for all the label information and some of the redundant info is being cut, thus hopefully making it that much easier for you to find the information you’re looking for.

In a less figurative sense, the transparency of flower and seeds are getting a boost because packaging regulations are being updated to allow for transparent packaging. This means that some of your favorite whacky tabbacky is going to be in packaging that will feature a peel back window or some other sort of viewing mechanism to allow you to see your flower before you’ve purchased it. As a result, cannabis brands that have beautiful flower will be able to present it in a way that can catch your attention. It also means that cannabis brands whose growing practices produce weed that looks like eviscerated cabbage are going to have to step their game up. That’s a big leap forward for those of us who are critical about the bag appeal of the weed that we buy.

Co-Packing

In other exciting news, you’ll be able to purchase co-packaged products very soon! For example, if you’re a fan of cannabis beverages, you’ll soon be able to buy them in packs as opposed to individual cans/bottles. This is something a lot of our customers have been asking for since we opened, so it’s awesome that the regulatory minds have taken the feedback to heart and are now allowing brands to package their products in bundles.  This change will apply to several categories of products including edibles, beverages, topicals and concentrates and requires that all the items packaged be the same type of product, while allowing for variances in flavours etc. Our cannabis industry is slowly becoming better and better, making us the envy of stoners the world over. Just another reason to love the country we live in.

So, keep an eye out for new packaging and far less obtuse labels hopefully hitting the market in the very near future!
